Abstract

Statistical analysis of the read-out signal waveforms revealed that the expected bit error rates or SNRs of the textured media are comparable to those of Te-based ablative recording media. The edge definition of the written bits in the textured media was significantly better than that obtained from the Te thin film media, while the peak height fluctuations of the textured media are somewhat greater than that of Te thin films. Dynamic noise measurements were made on unprotected and aged textured germanium films. Carrier-to-noise ratios calculated by the digital Fourier transform (50-kHz BW) were 41 and 43 dB for the textured media and the Te thin film media, respectively. Because of simple melting limited optical writing in the textured media, it was possible to obtain analytically the contrast as a function of the laser power. The experimental data agree well with the calculated contrast. This allows a great deal of simplification in the optimization of the SNR performance in the textured media.
