Fig. 1
Fig. 1

Block diagram showing the principal categories of components of a system for remote spatially defined measurements of chemical species using fiber-optic probes.

Fig. 2
Fig. 2

(a) Diagram of a first generation fiber-optic probe P1 used in experiments to measure Na and OH concentrations, (b) Pulsed fluorescence fiber-optic probe P2 used for OH measurements.

Fig. 3
Fig. 3

Sodium results with fluorescence signals plotted against sodium number density for a CH4–air flame at 1860 K. Above the absorption limit, the fluorescence results are shown plotted against number densities deduced from simultaneous absorption measurements. A straight line generated from these results is extended to lower signal levels to provide a calibration for sodium number densities below the absorption limit.

Fig. 4
Fig. 4

OH number density 1 cm above the the flat flame burner surface plotted as a function of equivalence ratio for CH4–air mixtures. The OH number density has been measured using both cw absorption and pulsed fluorescence.
