Summary of photothermal modulation of Mie scattering from submicron particles: A chopped IR source illuminates and heats the volatile particle causing its equilibrium size to fluctuate between the two radii shown. Photons from a cw visible laser are elastically scattered off the particle. Resultant Mie scattered signal contains a time varying component dependent upon the IR absorption cross section.
