Abstract

The accuracy of target alignment using the Hartmann test was measured by the glass microballoon perforation (Snout) test. We find a 45-μm rms pointing error, most of which is random.

Figures (4)

Fig. 1
Fig. 1

This photomicrograph of a typical damaged glass microballoon shows the holes produced by sequential shots of north and south beams. The ball diameter is 180 μm.

Fig. 2
Fig. 2

These histograms show the distribution of pointing error (i.e., hole location) referenced to the ball’s center.

Fig. 3
Fig. 3

This scatter plot shows the location of the center of each damage hole. N denotes the north beam, and S denotes the south beam. The north beam exhibits more systematic error than the south beam.

Fig. 4
Fig. 4

The experimental results of rms pointing error indicate that the south beam’s error is nearly all random, while about 30% of the north beam’s error is systematic.
