Abstract
Glass fibers of approximately 0.13-mm diam have been hermetically sealed through windows of Corning Code 7740 glass and Code 7052 glass, and into B2O3·3SiO2 glass as well. The seals were made with a 50-W CO2 laser at a power level of about 5 W. Transmission loss tests show a transit loss of <0.2 dB for a B2O3·3SiO2 clad fused silica fiber through a Corning Code 7740 glass window.
