Beam Coupling to Linear Waveguides Using Lenslike Waveguides

Abstract

Theoretical coupling of a guided Gaussian beam in a planar dielectric waveguide to a rectangular waveguide using a lenslike coupling region is investigated. The coupling region is formed by varying the thickness of the planar waveguide. When the center height of a sample structure is of the order of 1.58 wavelengths, a 100-λ wide beam can be coupled to a linear waveguide 5 λ wide in a distance of 957.35 λ. The theoretical coupling efficiency approaches 100%.
