Abstract

False spectra produced by diffraction gratings are analyzed. A better criteria for labeling Rowland ghosts is proposed. Assuming that only one periodic error affects the ruling of the grating, an expression for the ghosts’ intensities has been derived; it assigns different intensities to ghosts symmetrically placed on each side of spectral lines in any diffraction order.
