Abstract
A signal-dependent method of photon counting is described that reduces the time required to scan low-level optical spectra but does not sacrifice either the SNR or the dynamic range achieved by conventional methods. This variable-measurement-time technique is particularly applicable to spectra having a wide dynamic range. Implementation of this new technique using slightly modified commercial apparatus is discussed.
