Abstract

An image orthicon camera operated according to the cycle described in this paper appears capable of extending the astronomer’s limit of detection 3–4 stellar magnitudes lower than can be obtained with 103a0 film in the same exposure interval. When operating a tube with an S20 photocathode and a metal-oxide storage target at −20°C, it has been possible to continue to integrate a low-level input for as long as 3 hr. Various anomalies related to this type operation with point images have been observed. The causes and means for overcoming them are discussed.
