Steps employed for obtaining rigid, permanent single-mode fiber connections, (a) Connecting fiber to fiber by the application of a very small amount of adhesive, (b) Transforming the fragile connection to a rigid, permanent one by gluing the connection to a Lucite block by the employment of a large drop of adhesive, (c) The same method extended to bond a single-mode fiber to an integrated optics (IO) circuit chip, like a switch or modulator, (d) The connection again made rigid and permanent by applying a large drop of adhesive to mount the connection on a Lucite block.
