Objective Measurement of Resolution in Film Images

Abstract

It has been found experimentally that a correlation exists between visually determined resolution limits using four-bar patterns recorded on film and the measured intensity of laser light diffracted from a grating pattern recorded on the film near the four-bar patterns. This correlation has been established for one-lens type and film combination. A practical device has been constructed that reads resolution and is suitable for a production test of a lens–film system.
