Polarization-independent metasurface cloak for visible light

Abstract

Optical metasurfaces have been studied widely in recent years due to their fascinating ability to control light with ultrathin structures. It was recently demonstrated that a metasurface could realize cloaking for visible light but is polarization dependent. In this paper, we propose an extremely thin layer of metasurface cloak that can realize polarization-independent cloaking. By forming the metasurface with cylinder nanoantennas of different diameters and heights, this metasurface can introduce a local phase distribution that is independent of the polarization of the incident light. The reflected light of the metasurface is like a mirror reflection, as the local phase distribution modifies the wavefront of the incident light. Through finite-difference time-domain simulations, it is demonstrated that a bump looks like a flat plane when covered with this designed metasurface in spite of the incident light’s polarization.
