Abstract
We have studied coherent interactions of zero-π (0-π) pulses with a two-level system. The complete undamped Bloch equations and their rotating-wave, slowly varying envelope approximation version have both been considered. An expression describing a pulse Bloch–Siegert shift has been found. We also show that, within the usual Bloch theory, nonresonant 0-π pulses may lead to complete inversion of the atom.
