Abstract

We propose what is to our knowledge a novel storage ring that uses rational-harmonic phase modulation whereby the width of the modulation pulse is approximately equal to the data period and the ratio of the modulation frequency to the ring fundamental frequency is a noninteger. The stored data rate is then the lowest multiple of the modulation frequency and the fundamental frequency of the ring. Numerical simulation shows that the data rate of greater than the 40th harmonic of the modulation frequency can be stored stably in the ring, which means that ultrahigh-speed data pulses can be stored stably in the ring with a much lower modulation frequency.
