Abstract

Two different methods are successively applied to obtain approximate formulas describing dispersion properties of the asymmetric three-layered slab and W-type slab waveguides. One method begins with a differential equation for the transverse phase constant; another is a direct approach to the characteristic equation by using a far-from-cutoff approximation. Numerous figures are presented to reveal the accuracy of the approximate formulas obtained.
