Abstract

An interferometric technique has been developed for measuring the optical constants n and k of a metal. To evaluate the technique the optical constants of gold have been measured using several spectral lines from an Ar-ion laser and the 632.8 nm line of a He-Ne laser. Measurements were carried out on evaporated gold films varying in thickness from aproximately 40 to 200 nm. The index of refraction n was determined to within Δn≈ ± 0.02 and the extinction coefficient k to approximately 1%. The values obtained here are in good agreement with previous work.
