Tone Reproduction and Reversal in Carrier-Frequency Photography

Abstract

Recently, Bryngdahl obtained negative images from carrier-frequency photographs by reversing the modulation before recording. This paper discusses the role of the D–logE curve of photographic film in carrier-frequency photography and shows that positive and negative tone reproduction are obtained from the proportionality of the image luminance to the film characteristic α2(E), the derivative of amplitude transmittance with respect to the logarithm of exposure. An experiment suggests that reversal of tone reproduction might be of use for gray-scale compression.
