Reflecting Films of Platinum for the Vacuum Ultraviolet

Abstract

A technique for producing platinum films by induction heating evaporation has been developed which can be employed to produce coatings which reflect 24% at λ584 Å. The preparation conditions which are necessary to obtain films having the highest reflectance in the vacuum ultraviolet have been determined. Films made under these conditions show little change in reflectance after extended storage in air. The following optical constants have been determined for these platinum films: λ584 Å: n=0.97, k=1.03; λ735 Å: n=1.08, k=0.79; and λ1216 Å: n=1.28, k=1.16.
