Abstract

A calculation of the rate of volume photolysis of copper-doped silver chloride is described which provides a quantitative interpretation for experiments reported by Moser, Nail, and Urbach. A model for photoproduct formation, consistent with the Gurney–Mott theory, is discussed. Differential equations for the rate of photolysis are presented which consider the attenuation of the exposing light by the photoproduct but neglect electron–hole recombination processes. Although these nonlinear equations are not solved in closed form, equations which give upper and lower limits on the printout optical density as a function of time are derived; a reasonable fit with experimental photolytic growth curves of AgCl:Cu samples containing 2.2 and 0.2 ppm copper ions is obtained.
