Dark Adaptation as a Function of the Intensity and Distribution of Light across the Preadaptation Field

Abstract

Dark adaptation functions for three subjects were measured after preadaptation to luminances of 2500, 500, 100, 20, 4, and 0.8 ml. The distribution of light across the preadaptation field was varied so that 100%, 20%, 4%, or 0.8% of the total field area was luminous. The data suggest that different combinations of the intensity and area in preadaptation conditions, if the total amount of light is held constant, produce no important changes in the subsequent dark adaptation functions. Some applications of these data to equipment design are discussed.
