Optical Characteristics of Sheets of Scattering Materials

Abstract

There are a number of articles on the optical properties of sheets of scattering materials where the fundamental equations relating to such sheets have been derived or checked by experiment. These equations have, in general, two constants related to the materials involved. Except in the case of opal glasses these coefficients have not been related to the bulk properties and size of these materials. It is here shown, by geometric considerations, that for large particles two properly selected coefficients are independent, and their relationship to particle size is shown. The scattering coefficient proves to be inversely proportional to particle size while the absorption coefficient is independent of particle size. These coefficients can be measured accurately, and measurement of the scattering coefficient may prove a reliable means of checking particle size. The general expressions for the transmission and reflection of the sheets can be much simplified for thin sheets of material having low absorption.
