Abstract

In this paper, simple approximate formulas are derived for the intensity of secondary scattered (rescattered) sunlight, in a plane-stratified atmosphere of uniform composition, for high solar altitudes and weakly attenuated radiations. The formulas obtained are compared with those given by L. Silberstein in an earlier investigation and found to be simpler and less elaborate to evaluate. Numerical calculations are made for the functions involved and for the rescattered sunlight received at the ground from different directions, for the case when the sun is overhead and for a wave-length corresponding to weakly attenuated radiations. These calculations show that our approximate formulas are really adequate, giving numerical values in closer agreement with the exact values than those of Silberstein.

For other wave-lengths and other altitudes of the sun, simple approximate expressions have been given elsewhere.
