The Stability and Reproducibility of a Carbon Arc Image Furnace

Abstract

A statistical analysis of the variation in the irradiance at the focus of a carbon arc image furnace source is given, with the result that a precision of greater than ±5% cannot be expected even with averaging. The spread of data obtained on successive measurements with a single positive carbon in the arc may be nearly as wide as the total spread of a large series of measurements.
