Optical device for the measurement of small volume changes

Abstract

An optical device which monitors movement of a transparent liquid in a thin-walled constant bore glass capillary tube is described. The change in electrical signal from the device is directly proportional to the distance moved by the liquid–air interface in the tube. Application of the device to the measurement of small contractions in volume, accompanying the polymerization of thin monomer films, is outlined.
