Abstract

From NASA Tech Briefs , 7, No. 4 ( Summer, 1983) the following are descriptions of some of the systems in fields of interest to the optics community. There is a novel multispectral dual-aperture Schmidt objective using beam splitters. By use of a multilayered interference structure a soft x-ray mirror can be constructed. A mirror can be formed on composite materials by depositing a smooth coating on an otherwise hard-to-polish substrate. A range-finder laser uses self- instead of device-modulation. A grating is used to demultiplex wavelengths from an optical communication fiber. Turbulent-flame acoustic emissions are sensitive to the air/fuel ratios and can be used to study combustion conditions. Work on the temperature control of components has resulted in a tenfold improvement in pyrheliometer accuracy. A microcomputer can make possible an external low-power alphanumeric generator for labels on cathode-ray-tubes.
