Large-mode-area Fibers Enabled by Significant Differential Mode Losses

Abstract

Differential mode losses can be used to scale mode areas of fibers while maintaining single-mode operation. Coiling, essential for high average power, is possible due to the possibility of strong waveguides. Recent progress is reviewed.
