Abstract

Direct measurement of excimer laser-induced densification of silica and binary silica systems is reported using an interferometric technique interpreted with a finite-element model. From the calculation of the "unconstrained" densification," the corresponding induced refractive index and axial stress are calculated for a fiber Bragg grating geometry. It is shown that there is a strong compositional dependence of the densification as well as on the excitation wavelength.
