This review paper considers the factors that determine the optical quality of the eye in the context of the feasibility of "perfect" correction. Contributions to image quality include the cornea surface shape, which may be modified with refractive surgery. However the crystalline lens makes an important contribution to the focus and overall optical quality of the normal eye in a manner that varies with age and accommodative state. In addition, optical quality varies with refractive state, pupil size and with the centration of the eye's components, including the pupil. Optical modeling using anatomically based schematic eyes and further measurements will be necessary to determine the optimal lifelong correction to the optics of the eye.
