Investigating the breakdown of the continuum model in ultrafast vibrations of small metal nanoparticles and clusters

Abstract

Ultrafast mechanical vibrations of small metal nanoparticles and atomically defined clusters are investigated by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The transition from continuous elasticity to molecular dynamics is explored by analyzing the size dependence of vibrational frequencies.
