Abstract

We report what is to our knowledge the lowest noise achieved to date with an external-cavity modelocked semiconductor diode laser. The amplitude and residual phase noise of the 10 GHz pulsetrain have been measured over six decades of offset frequency to have RMS values of 0.12% and 43 fs, respectively. Use of this modelocked pulsetrain as an optical sampling stream in a next-generation hybrid analog-to-digital converter would provide a theoretical conversion accuracy of 8.6 bits.
