Abstract

We describe a new method for measuring the timing jitter of modelocked lasers directly in the time-domain. By using cross-correlation between two modelocked lasers, very high accuracy is obtained. We compare the jitter results obtained with three different analysis methods, and we investigate the accuracy of the cross-correlation method. In the presence of typical noise levels, the peak fitting errors are found to vary inversely with the pulse area, giving an accuracy of less than 5 fs for the first few pulses in a cross-correlation scan.
