Abstract

There is growing demand for improving the seizure resistance of cast iron cylinder liners. We developed a novel approach involving ns pulsed fiber laser texturing to form regularly patterned micro-scale pits on the pre-modulated liner surface. As a result, periodically distributed pits with a dimension of about 100 μm in width, 10 μm in depth and with an area ratio of about 12.5% were formed on the liner surface. Systematic SRV tribological tests were performed to approve that the seizure resistance was much improved by our approach. Considering that ns pulsed fiber laser processing is cost effective, good potential applications of this approach can be forecasted to improve the performance of the conventional automobile engines.
