Abstract

Our group’s past work has shown how metal nanoparticles can enhance spectral response by 16 times at 1050 nm in thin silicon solar cells and by 33% averaged across the whole spectrum. Localised plasmons are responsible for increased coupling of light into such cells. Also of interest are schemes based on propagating surface plasmons which have potential in the group’s silicon quantum dot and hot carrier “third generation” devices. Both past and planned progress are reviewed.
