We compare measured relative-intensity-noise (RIN) spectra with newly derived theoretical predictions of spontaneous emission noise for a distributed feedback fiber laser sensor with cavity-Q exceeding 108. Predicted suppression of relaxation oscillation noise under conditions of strong gain saturation is observed. We believe that these results provide the strongest evidence to date that fiber laser RIN is driven by spontaneous emission.
