Heralded transfer of a photonic polarization qubit onto an atomic quantum memory

Abstract

We demonstrate heralded absorption of a single photon by a single trapped atomic ion, thereby mapping the photonic polarization state onto the atomic spin state with 97.9 % average fidelity.
