Ultra-broadband phase matching of optical frequency conversion using transient molecular birefringence

Abstract

We show that transient birefringence imposed in a molecular gas with a femtosecond laser pulse phase matches nonlinear frequency conversion with bandwidths that support 1 fs laser pulses with up to a 20% conversion efficiency.
