Abstract
All-optical methods of reaching of BEC phase transition have been pursued since the early days of laser cooling. Despite many impressive developments beyond the limits set by Doppler cooling, including polarization gradient cooling, VSCPT, Raman cooling, and evaporative cooling in optical dipole force traps, the best previous efforts produced atomic phase space densities a factor of 10 away from the BEC transition.
