Abstract
Recently, groups world wide have investigated photonic crystal structures for future photonic integrated circuit applications.1 The existence of photonic band gaps in photonic crystals results in various applications such as lasers, light emitting diodes, planar waveguides, and channel drop filters. In this report, we propose and demonstrate lasing action in ring-type resonators defined by two-dimensional photonic crystals on a freestanding slab with InGaAsP active layers emitting at 1.55 μm.
