Abstract
Experiments on modulations instability in a photorefractive crystal' showed that is possible to generate an array of bright spatial solitons when a low modulation interference pattern is propagated in the crystal with a self-focusing nonlinearity. Similar behaviour is expected in the case of a Kerr-like self-defocusing media with gain to generate an array of dark spatial solitons.2,3
