Abstract

The (ab)-plane conductivity of high-temperature superconductors shows in a limited range of the infrared spectrum, i.e. 10 to 20 μm in YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO), a sharp dip for temperatures below the superconducting transition temperature Tc, followed by a broad maximum at higher photon energies.1 The nature of this mid-infrared absorption band which shows its largest amplitude for optimally doped material is currently not well understood although different models have been proposed to explain this behavior ranging from boson-mediated quasiparticle absorption to strongly energy dependent scattering rates of quasiparticles.1·2
