Abstract

Many applications of optical techniques require the use of materials with a large electrooptic response, and a large body of recent research1–3 has been directed toward the development of superior electrooptic materials. In this contribution, we describe a technique that can be used to increase the value of the electrooptic coefficient of essentially any electrooptic material by forming a composite out of that material. The composite consisting of alternating layers of a quadratic electrooptic material (designated material a in the ensuing analysis) and a buffer material (designated material b) having a different linear dielectric constant.
