Abstract
One-dimensional (1D) quantum structures have been extensively studied in the past 10 years because of their potential use in future device applications. Coupled QWRs are an important class of such 1D systems where the coupling will give rise to additional properties useful for devices based on tunneling and superlattice effects. Here we report on the first direct observation of electronic coupling between quantum wires as observed in photoluminescence (PL) and PL excitation (PLE) measurements of double quantum wires (DQWRs). The DQWRs were fabricated by low pressure OMCVD on V-grooved GaAs substrates.1 The asymmetric coupled DQWRs contain two crescent-shaped GaAs QWRs separated by an AlGaAs barrier. The thin QWR (t-QWR) has a nominal thickness of 20 Å, the wide QWR (w-QWR) 35 Å, and the barrier 17 to 35 Å.
