Abstract
A eompreiiensive analysis of suitable pairs of a rare-gas ion and a metal atom was carried out in terms of selective excitation of an excited metal ion level as a result of a fast charge-exchange reaction. Pairs with a small energy defect ΔE for the reactions R+ + M → R + M+*, which have large cross sections of populating the excited ion level, were selected and analyzed. Radiative transitions M+* → M+ + hωVUV lie in the XUV and it is possible to achieve population inversion using rare-gas ion beams colliding with confined metal vapors.1
