Momentum and torque transfer from light to liquid crystal

Abstract

The torque changing the orientation of transparent LC due to the action of the light field leads to the giant orientational nonlinearity (GON) (see Refs. 1 and 2), Recent experiments3,4 demonstrated orientational nonlinearity in dye-doped absorbing LCs, about 100 times larger than GON. What is the source of the torque?
