Abstract

Intracavity-laser spectroscopy (ICLS), which has been developing for 25 years,1,2 is the most sensitive technique for absorption analysis. The first papers on the subject indicated that the general limit of ICLS sensitivity is determined by spontaneous emission and that the corresponding minimum absorption coefficient that may be detected is kmin = 1/(cTphM), where c is the velocity of light, Tph is the photon lifetime in the cavity, and M is the number of photons per mode.
