Spontaneous-emission lifetime of Wannier excitons in mesoscopic semiconductor quantum disks

Abstract

Wannier excitons in semiconductor quantum-confinement structures are expected to show rapid spontaneous emission because of their coherent nature and the breakdown of translational symmetry. Theories of the radiative lifetime have been presented for two structures: quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor quantum wells1 and spherical microcrystals.1,2 A key to deriving the thoeretical formulas is the selection rule between the radiation field with wave vector q and excitan center-of-mass motion with wave vector K.
