Abstract

Recently, it was shown experimentally1 that nonlinearities of χ(2) materials may create a nonlinearity-induced phase shift due to cascaded effects. Here we consider parametric interactions between the fundamental and second harmonics in a dispersive (or diffractive) χ(2) medium and demonstrate that a variety of nonlinear effects related. to cubic materials., such as modulational instabilities, self-focusing, and (spatial or temporal) optical soldons, can exist solely because of nonlinear parametric interactions. We present novel families of stable bright and dark two-wave solitons in a purely quadratic dispersive nonlinear medium.
