Laser photodesorption of resonantly absorbing atoms from the surface of transparent dielectrics–microscopic mechanism of the process

Abstract

Desorption induced by electronic transition has been studied for a long time, and a number of theoretical models have been proposed. Nevertheless, a detailed understanding of the energy-transfer mechanism within the adsorbate-substrate complex has not been attained. To contribute to the understanding of this problem we have studied one of the simplest processes of this kind–laser photodesorption of resonantly absorbing atoms from the surface of a transparent dielectric. Sodium atoms adsorbed on sapphire were chosen as a model system.
