Abstract

Propagation of resonant ultrashort optical pulses in dense media was investigated by numerical integration of the Maxwell wave equation coupled to the extended Bloch equations. We show that the ultrafast intrinsic optical-switching mechanism in thin films characterizes dynamical aspects of these materials even when the medium is of finite length.
