Second-harmonic generation from chiral surfaces

Abstract

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) studies of monolayer surfaces have been used primarily to study systems possessing a mirror plane of symmetry perpendicular to the surface. These studies have yielded information about the orientation of these monolayers. Chiral molecules oriented at a surface lack a mirror plane. Because of this surface chirality the usual equations used to describe SHG from the surface must be modified.
